65 North Harvard Street, Allston, MA
Open daily, dawn to dusk
If you’re in Boston and looking for a free and serious workout, look no further than Harvard Stadium. Located just over the Charles River from Harvard Square in Lower Allston, the concrete stadium has a capacity of 30,000 spread over 37 sections in the horse-shoe shaped building. With more than 1,000 steps that are almost twice as deep and tall as a normal stair, Harvard Stadium is sure to give your legs the workout they deserve.
The gates are open from dawn to dusk, and you can find individuals and groups climbing the stairs at almost any given moment. There are some organized groups that meet at the steps on a regular basis – if you are able to go on a Wednesday morning at 6:30am, you’re in for an extra special treat as you join hundreds of dedicated members of the November Project who run the stadium every week.
The Harvard Stadium workout has numerous options. Most run or climb up the tall steps and then jog or walk down the regular stairs. See how many sections you can do in 30, 45, or 60 minutes. A full tour is the completion of all 37 sections. If you’re feeling extra inspired, go for an even 50 or 100 sections!
