“You have to go to Chautauqua. Chautauqua is Boulder,” a Boulder running store employee told me when I asked her where visitors should go to run. It’s clear that Boulder runners love the expansive park, and a trip there makes it easy to understand why. Although parking can be confusing – there are small lots but mostly street parking in residential areas – this park offers loads of recreational opportunities. Chautauqua’s many trails are clearly marked and range in difficulty from easy to technical, and many different lengths are available. I was caught off guard by a sign telling me to expect bear and mountain lion activity while I was out on the trail! Depending on the trail that you choose, some shade is available, and restrooms, trashcans, and water are available in the central area of the park. Chautauqua also offers tennis courts and a playground, so the whole family can enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Parking is said to be difficult during peak times, so try to head to the park during off-peak hours if at all possible. It’s worth the trip if you’re looking to get out on the trails in Boulder.
