2050 Middle Street, Sullivan’s Island, SC
Sullivan’s Island might be kind of a strange recommendation, since it’s not intentionally a fitness resource – it’s a town. Directly across the water from Mount Pleasant and the mainland, Sullivan’s Island is home to the historic Fort Moultrie, previously known as Fort Sullivan, and was the site of a major battle during the Revolutionary War. Today, the small island is home to a beautiful beach, some great restaurants, and quaint Charleston homes. Even better, its quiet streets are long and straight, making it the perfect place to run or cycle. The island is extremely popular with athletes looking to get in a run or ride, so the local population is conscientious while driving. Although only 3.5 miles long from end to end, Sullivan’s Island also connects to Mount Pleasant and Isle of Palms by bridge, greatly expanding the distance one can travel by foot or by bike. Note that Sullivan’s Island has the least traffic and widest streets of the three towns, so if you’re particularly concerned about avoiding drivers, feel free to stay on the island and do multiple loops to get your mileage in. I’ve certainly done it plenty of times when I worked in Charleston! Parking is available on the streets and water and porta potties are available at the park in the center of town.
