West Ashley Greenway and Bikeway
80 Folly Rd Blvd, Charleston, SC
Open daily dawn to dusk
The West Ashley Greenway and Bikeway offer a convenient and safe recreation option for cyclists and pedestrians alike. The West Ashley Greenway stretches 10.5 miles through the neighborhoods of West Ashley (on the western side of the Ashley River, naturally) and is primarily a fine dirt and gravel unpaved multi-use path. Portions of the trail are paved with asphalt, but the fine, well-packed surface makes it suitable for road bikes regardless. The greenway parallels busy U.S. 17, which is lined with shopping centers and neighborhoods, making the trail accessible from any number of locations and convenient regardless of where you are in West Ashley. Intersections with neighborhood streets, while regular, are quiet and well-marked, and the trail has plenty of shade in the afternoon, making it perfect for those hot Charleston summers. Those looking to extend their mileage can hop over to the West Ashley Bikeway, which is a 2.5-miles long asphalt path on the northern side of U.S. 17. Cyclists should be cautious of some uneven pavement on the Bikeway, however. Bathrooms and water fountains can be found at parks along both routes and gas stations throughout the commercial areas on U.S. 17. Parking is available at both termini, including the north end of the South Windermere Shopping Center (address above).
