Bike Source is a gigantic bike store in Charlotte’s South End – truly one of the biggest and most comprehensive stores I’ve ever visited, and that is reflected by its 2013 Best of Charlotte award! To accompany the size of the store, there is a large staff of willing and able employees ready to help with all your bike and gear needs. Many of the employees have been at the store for a number of years, as there is a low turnover rate and the store has been open since 1996. Bike Source carries Specialized, Yeti, Niner, Electra, and Fairdale bikes, but the ample service department is capable of repairing any brand. They’ve even been known to work on scooters and wagons, as they have the largest stock of repair parts in the metro area. The store also offers a full-service fitting process, including body geometry and motion capture. To say there is a full selection of gear and apparel would be an understatement; Bike Source sells pretty much everything you could possibly need for a bike. The nutrition selection is particularly impressive, as the store carries a large number of brands ranging from popular to obscure.
While the store does not officially participate in the bike rental business, which is not popular in the area, it does offer a demo mountain bike fleet. Cyclists can rent the bikes for 3 days at a cost of $100, which goes towards either a purchase or is used for the maintenance of the bike. Bike Source is heavily involved in the local cycling community and sponsors many events; a group ride also leaves from the store:
- Thursdays, 7:30 pm – Although this ride is not officially affiliated with the store, it does leave from Bike Source. This social ride is about 15 miles and is ridden at a very easy pace (about 10 mph) with stops for beer along the way! The ride does not leave if there is rain or if temperatures are below 32 degrees at 7:30 pm.
