Grand Canal Trail
Central Avenue and Highland Street, Phoenix, AZ
Phoenix’s extensive canal trail system boasts many pathways throughout the city, but none is longer than the Grand Canal Trail, which runs 38 miles through the Phoenix Metro Area. The multi-use path is mostly concrete but also features some areas of packed dirt. Cyclists should be aware that there are many street intersections in the portions of the trail located close to downtown, so if you are aiming for a long, speedy ride, it would be best to head out closer to the suburbs. There is no shade or designated water or bathrooms along the trail, but there are many gas stations at intersecting streets if needed. The pathway is popular with pedestrians and cyclists alike during the day, but some portions of the trail may not be suitable for use when alone at night. Parking is available at the intersection of Central Avenue and Highland Street , but the trail can be picked up from many different parts of Phoenix, so head over from wherever is convenient for you! While the canal system may not necessarily be the most scenic of Phoenix’s fitness resources, it is a great place to head for a long ride or run if you don’t want to worry about getting lost or navigating through the busy streets.
