South Mountain Park
10919 S. Central Ave., Phoenix, AZ
Open daily from 5 am to 11 pm
South Mountain is one of the Phoenix area’s best known and most beloved fitness landmarks! Rising from the desert South of Phoenix, the park offers and expansive trail system with dozens of trails of varying difficulty. While the trails themselves are primarily dirt and rock, there are also smooth roads throughout the park that are suitable for cycling, as mountain bikes are not allowed on the trails. There is a central ranger station that can provide more information on which trails may be appropriate for your goals and activity level, but the website does a great job of that as well. The trailheads are very well marked and easy to find, and there is ample parking. The trails are also well marked, with a marker indicating the name of the trail almost always within sight. The trails are a mixture of sand, rock, and gravel and have some technical elements and variety of elevation change, but offer gorgeous views of Phoenix as a reward. Although there is a water fountain and a bathroom facility at the Central Range Station, it is recommended that visitors bring their own water to the trailheads, as there is none out on the mountain. Cell phone service may be limited depending on your carrier and which trail you are using, but the area is very open and is safe and populated.
