Tempe Town Lake
Famous as the site of the Ironman Arizona swim portion, Tempe Town Lake is a fantastic fitness resource near downtown Tempe. The multi-use concrete path around the lake is a 5-mile loop with a wide path suitable for cyclists and pedestrians alike. While there is no shade along the route with the exception of bridges and overpasses, the lake offers plenty of bathrooms, water fountains, and benches so you can rest. For those who prefer to run on a softer surface, the lake has plenty of sand and dirt along the lake. Views of Tempe, Arizona State University’s stadium, and the lake itself make up the route, which is very popular with running and cycling groups and is constantly busy. Those interested in less traditional forms of recreation can rent boats and kayaks at Tempe Beach Park for a workout on the water!
Parking is available in downtown Tempe, Tempe Beach Park, and underneath overpasses in lots specifically for this purpose. I parked at the North Bank Operations center, which has a large lot covered by an overpass and a porta-potty right in the lot.
