There’s no better way to get some speedwork in (and actually be held accountable for running faster than normal) like a track workout. Tulsa has a great Tuesday night track workout held at the University of Tulsa (TU) for anyone who would like to join. What is really nice about this track workout is that they actually have running coaches that direct the workout. They divide you up into groups by pace per mile, offer water and lead a warm up before the running workout begins. You’ll easily be able to find the running pace group that’s right for you and it’s not too hard to drop in or run up to a different paced group as the workout progresses. These workouts are put on by OU Physicians and Fleet Feet Tulsa.
There is parking directly adjacent to the track entrance near the student housing. The track has a nice bathroom that they allow the runners to use and water is provided. However, in the summer months it’s best to bring your own water as it gets blazing hot and the water they provide goes really fast!
The stretching session they lead directly before the workout is a great way to warm up and listen to any updates the coaches may have about the day’s workout, upcoming races, running technique or general track information. General track etiquette they ask everyone to follow is to run single line in a lane and to stay on the inside of the track so faster runners can pass you. If you hear someone yell, “track,” that means a faster runner is approaching and would like to pass you. Carefully look over your shoulder and move to the inside lane to allow them to pass. If you need to pass a slower runner do the same in reverse.
