Fountainhead Regional Park is the starting point of the 18-miles long Bull Run – Occoquan Trail. The point-to-point trail is open only to pedestrians and equestrians and winds its way through five parks. The natural trail is completely rolling hills and can be fairly technical in many areas, with plenty of rocks and roots to navigate. The trail is heavily shaded and can be humid in the summer. Other runners and hikers frequent the trail, especially near Fountainhead, so one is unlikely to be alone during the day. The closing times for the park change seasonally, and entry is free. Leashed pets are welcome, but be aware that you may encounter horses along the trail. Cyclists looking to mountain bike are able to utilize the 8-mile trail loop that is open only to cyclists. The popular trail is in use throughout the year but may be closed if the ground is particularly wet. Fountainhead Regional Park offers a serene opportunity to get in a workout in the bustling D.C. Metro Area while feeling like you’re a million miles away from the city!
